About The Diana Award
The Diana Award was established in 1999 in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, to recognize young people creating positive change in their communities and beyond.
The Award was established by a board chaired by Gordon Brown, then Chancellor of the Exchequer and later Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Today, The Diana Award is the only charity established in memory of Princess Diana and continues her legacy of supporting and recognizing young people.
The Award has the support of both of Princess Diana’s sons, Prince William, The Prince of Wales, and Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex.
The Diana Award describes the recognition as the highest accolade a young person can achieve for social action or humanitarian efforts. Recipients are nominated for their work and assessed according to criteria including social impact, youth leadership, service, vision, and their ability to inspire others.
Mohammad Jawid Amani and Change Makers of the World
Mohammad Jawid Amani founded Change Makers of the World in Afghanistan as a youth-led volunteer community working to create positive social change.
Through Change Makers of the World, Amani has led and contributed to initiatives focused on education, youth empowerment, humanitarian action, peace, and human rights. The community has supported children and students affected by conflict, organized educational and cultural programs, advocated for girls’ education, and created opportunities for young Afghans to participate in issues affecting their future.
His work has also included youth advocacy during the Afghan peace process. Through the National Youth Consensus for Peace, Amani contributed to efforts to strengthen the participation and representation of young Afghans in the Intra-Afghan Peace Process.
Receiving The Diana Award 2023
In 2023, Mohammad Jawid Amani was named a recipient of The Diana Award and included in its international Roll of Honour.
The official citation from The Diana Award recognizes Amani’s dedication to addressing social and human rights issues in Afghanistan through Change Makers of the World. It highlights his work providing education and supplies to war-affected students, leading educational and cultural programs, and contributing to youth engagement in Afghanistan’s peace process.
The citation also recognizes that this work continued despite serious challenges and personal threats, noting the positive impact his commitment has had on the lives of people in Afghanistan.
For Change Makers of the World, The Diana Award represents an important international recognition of the work that began with a young Afghan-led volunteer initiative and grew through the contributions of volunteers, educators, supporters, and young people.
For Amani, the recognition is not an end point. It is an encouragement to continue working for the communities and causes that led to the Award in the first place.
